And for the most part, we know what to expect from those levels: wider on the bottom and narrower near the top, since that’s what physics and engineering tell us makes sense.

The striking BE House in Paredes, Portugal turns that expectation upside-down. Designed by the Portuguese firm spaceworkers, the three-level home features what appears to be an impossible middle layer made entirely of glass. The glass level is actually smaller than the overhanging enclosed layer, making the house appear to be precariously stacked out of order.

On the lowest level, the home’s mundane service functions are hidden within solid walls. A surprising feature also resides there, however: a partially covered swimming pool. With half of the pool under the shade of the house itself and the other half open to the sunlight, residents and visitors can choose to bask in the sunlight or cool off in the shade.

The middle level appears nearly transparent, giving the impression that the level above is almost floating in the air. In this see-through layer lie the public living spaces and a neutral color palette that leads the eye to the surrounding vistas.

In keeping with the open feeling of the middle level, it is surrounded by a large open deck on which the residents can enjoy a view of the city or overlook their lovely pool.
At the top of the home is the mysteriously “floating” layer. It is enclosed and contains the home’s private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The top level contains partitions that, in contrast with the mostly open space below, allow for a sense of privacy and retreat.

The post Floating Home Perches Atop a Glass Layer first appeared on Dornob.

An entire city turns on its head to support your coffee table books, mugs and remotes with this stunningly crafted wooden table by Cyprus-based designer Stelios Mousarris, reminiscent of the movie ‘Inception.’ In that 2010 film, a dream-within-a-dream concept enables hallucinatory scenes of urban settings bending and folding upon themselves seamlessly, defying all laws of gravity and logic.

In his 3D-printed table, Mousarris arranges streets, sidewalks and skyscrapers as they would appear in a real cityscape, with the plane they’re built upon curving upward until more than half of the neighborhood slice hanging upside-down. But in an interview with 3Ders, the designer says his inspiration really came from waves. “I wanted to merge two completely different things together: the ocean, something very organic and beautiful, with buildings, something very manmade.”

Mousers designed the table using 3D modeling programs Rhino and Cinema4D. Bending a thin steel frame into the desired shape, he covered it with a layer of veneer plywood and then had a local 3D printer manufacture dozens of buildings for the city scene. This step alone took about a month to complete before the individual buildings could be glued to the base.

“Defying the rules of gravity, the city bends ruthlessly into the wave. Restless, powerful, fearless, it raises its glorious skyline and becomes an urban legend. The piece illustrates an urban skyline scattered with skyscrapers that seemingly lifts into the air and finally folds back onto itself in a single, continuous curve. A series of meticulously carved buildings add a sense of realism to the otherwise surreal design object, which carefully balances on the lower section of the street.”

“This piece’s inverted landscape uses the overlapping surface as the tabletop made from wood, steel and 3D printing technology. This signature piece that gave birth to the Mousarris Wave City Family is featured in MAD (Musée des Arts Décoratifs) in Paris.”

Call it artsy, pretentious or pointless if you will … but like the scene of a multi-car crash there is something morbidly fascinating about watching an entire room turned upside down, spilling its contents slowly (at first – then quickly) all over the place.

A steady spin cycle takes this rather drab and cluttered kitchen-in-a-box from right-side up to upside down (then even further around) over the space of ten minutes. Some things fall quickly while others (like the ceiling light) twist and turn before finally breaking.

Not to oversimplify, Zeger Reyers works at the intersection of natural processes and man-made forms – allowing erosion and time to reclaim objects in some cases while simulating environmental objects or forces of nature in others.

“The kitchen is becoming an increasingly important part of our homes. Architects’ ideas of how modern flats should be designed and the increasing number of cooking shows on television in the last years seem to have triggered the transformation of the kitchen from a practical place to a central social space it now is in many modern homes.”

“Originally, the kitchen was like a microcosm in our houses, a practical place where things were being produced, where food was being prepared. The kitchen used to be a working space more than a living space. Nowadays both uses are combined in spacious and loft-like flats with open kitchens. The distance between the cook and his family and guests is minimised by the fluidity with which the living room transforms into kitchen space and dining room. The term ‘naked chef’, as coined by Jamie Oliver – one of the first TV cooks to have implemented ‘fusion cooking’ in everyday cooking –, is well in place for these new homes: the cook performs before the eyes of all those present, be it family, friends or people that visit for the first time.”

“To cook is to create and cooking needs inventiveness as much as it needs discipline. A cook is in the kitchen what a captain is on the bridge of a ship. The world as a kitchen, where ingredients become food, which is being cooked up, heated, kept in the fridge, reheated, deep-frozen, put in the microwave, thrown away, left to rot… “

The post Rotating Kitchen: Artist Turns Room Upside Down first appeared on Dornob.
