If you were disappointed back in January when the latest James Bond movie was postponed yet again, you’re in luck. Artist Leonie Wharton is offering up a little something to tide you over until the new October 2021 release date.

Commissioned home improvement connection site HomeAdvisor, Wharton created a poster series immortalizing the most famous Bond movie architecture. Graphically designed in simple, high-contrast lines, she chose at least one location to highlight from each of the previous 25 films. With one poster featuring all 48 places and individual posters of each, these dramatic red, black, and gray illustrations also include a short description of the events that took place there in each movie.

Here are some of our favorites For Your Eyes Only, even if it does feel like Tomorrow Never Dies until the new No Time to Die film comes out:

Skyfall Lodge

The Bond family home, featured in the 2012 film Skyfall, was a stately mansion located in the Scottish Highlands. Designed by art director Dean Clegg, the gorgeous estate (that was later blown up on screen by terrorist villain Raoul Silva) was based on traditional Scottish stone homes with their small, mullioned windows and mossy walls.

Volcano Lair

Perhaps one of the coolest evil lairs of all time, Wharton created a succinct outline of the hollowed-out volcano from 1967’s You Only Live Twice. While exterior shots of this location were filmed at Mount Shinmoe-dake on Japan’s southern island, the interiors were manufactured on the British Pinewood Studios lot.

King’s House

Jamaica was the tropical paradise depicted in the very first Bond motion picture, Dr. No (1962). For this poster, Wharton captures the majestic building where the spy meets with the island’s acting governor.

St. Petersburg Square

This building has actually played double roles in Bond films: first as itself in 1995’s GoldenEye, and then as the MI6 headquarters in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies. In England today, its real purpose is as an arts center.

Blofeld’s Lair

The minimalist home of villain Ernst Blofeld in 2015’s Spectre is actually known as the villa Dar Bianca in real life, located in a surprisingly lush park-like setting in Morocco. Film producers used CGI to place it in the inhospitable desert mountains we see in the movie.

Willard Whyte’s Summer House

This is the bold, modernist home where Bond is detained by Blofeld’s comrades in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). Called the Elrod House in our reality, its striking design was drafted in 1968 by architect John Lautner.

Fort Knox

The Kentucky safehold for U.S. gold was the target of the Bond villain in 1964’s Goldfinger. Best of all, this cool graphic has the fortress sitting atop the radiating red sun.

Castle Thane

Last but not least is another temporary HQ for the British Secret Intelligence Service: Castle Thane. Modeled after Eilean Donan, a 13th-century estate in the western Scottish Highlands situated at the confluence of three gorgeous sea lochs, Castle Thane was a beautiful backdrop for Bond and M to rendezvous in 1999’s The World is Not Enough.

The post HomeAdvisor Explores Iconic James Bond Buildings With Flashy Graphic Posters first appeared on Dornob.

Banksy is in the British headlines once again. Often cited as the world’s most famous street artist, Banksy has gained international recognition for his provocative, political, and often controversial work. Now, he’s had to recall a print that he was promising to some of the voters in the recent UK general election. The Banksy poster in question is a reworking of the artist’s iconic “Balloon Girl” stencil, in which a girl loses hold of a red, heart-shaped balloon and looks after it as it floats away. For this series, Banksy decided to put an image of the Union Jack on the balloon, speaking to the idea of a lost Britain following the Brexit referendum and voicing his own concerns that the election results could push the UK further down a disastrous route. In a stroke of supreme controversy, the limited-edition poster was offered to anyone who voted against the conservative Tories.

The contentious artwork appeared on Banksy’s website well before the election and was accompanied by a caption informing viewers that the print would be available for free to the registered voters living and voting in the Bristol North West, Bristol West, North Somerset, Thornbury, Kingswood, and Filton districts. Incidentally, five of these six constituencies happen to be governed by sitting Tories. To have the complimentary poster mailed to them, citizens had to vote against the Tories and send a photo of their ballot to Banksy’s website. Naturally, the post came with a self-preservational legal notice, which read, “this print is a souvenir piece of campaign material, it is in no way meant to influence the choices of the electorate, has no monetary value, is for amusement purposes only and is strictly not for re-sale.”

The post immediately attracted criticism on Instagram, where Banksy was also promoting the offer. Surprisingly, a majority of the complaints the artist received were non-political. Instead, many people expressed their concerns over taking pictures inside polling stations, which is illegal and could have rendered several ballots null and void. One spokesperson from the Electoral Commission explicitly warned voters against participating in the promotion, stating: “Given the risk that someone taking a photo inside a polling station may be in breach of the law, whether intentionally or not, the commission’s advice is against taking any photos inside polling stations.”

On June 6th, just two days before the country was set to vote in the general election, a new post appeared on the artist’s website explaining that he had recalled the poster and that he had never intended to disrupt any electoral proceedings. The post reads, “I have been warned by the Electoral Commission that the free print offer will invalidate the election result. So I regret to announce this ill-conceived and legally dubious promotion has now been canceled.” Given the fact that the Conservatives failed to win a majority in the actual election and ended up with a hung parliament, it’s safe to say that Banksy’s free poster campaign could have easily and single-handedly influenced the outcome.

The post Provocative Banksy Poster “Balloon Girl” Recalled Ahead of UK Election first appeared on Dornob.

What is YourOwnMaps?

YourOwnMaps is a brand-new, San Francisco-based company that offers their adventurous customers travel memorabilia in the form of personalized map art. The company’s goal is to bring people closer to their favorite places on earth. Whether it’s one of your usual vacation spots, your hometown, or a city where you met someone special, YourOwnMaps will turn any destination into a modern wall map that you can proudly display in your home.

How Does It Work?

When creating your map, you’ll be asked to type in the name of a city or region. YourOwnMaps will let you select any town in the world, no matter how big or small it might be. Alternatively, you can use one of the company’s pre-made pieces and edit it to suit your tastes. Once you’ve chosen a location, you’ll be able to zoom in and out and drag the map around to achieve the exact scale you want. Edit the text printed on the map by typing out your own header, subheader, and tagline. If you opt out of including a custom tagline, the text will default to your destination’s latitude and longitude coordinates.

You can also customize the color of your map. Currently, the company prints in blue, green, red, yellow, colored, and light (white) for a total of six options. This means you can easily match your map to your or your recipient’s home decor! You can’t go wrong with the sleek black and white option, though those with an eye for color might prefer a bright, popping shade of red. Finally, select your desired layout, landscape or portrait, and poster size. Submit your design, make the payment, and wait for the magic to happen!

YourOwnMaps monitors each order from start to finish, working with family-owned printing shops and hand-checking each poster to ensure the best possible quality. In the future, the company hopes to collaborate with local artists to further expand their range of available graphic and design options. Once all of your specifications have been met, YourOwnMaps packages your order and ships it to you from the United States.

Who is Behind this Map Art Concept?

Co-founder Humphrey Yang created YourOwnMaps.com as a solution to his own struggles with souvenir shopping. Upon taking a trip to Switzerland and Austria, Yang was enchanted by a set of large-scale wall maps he saw being sold as tourist memorabilia. Unfortunately, limited luggage space prevented him from bringing any of them home. As soon as he got back to North Carolina, Humphrey was determined to find a piece of artwork that resembled what he had seen in Europe as a way of commemorating his recent adventure.

Try as he might, he could not find a regional map that matched his vision. Having nowhere else to turn to, Yang began to create his own in early 2017 with the launch of YourOwnMaps. The phrase “Bring your adventures from anywhere, everywhere” aptly became their slogan, which embraces the idea that all travel memories can live on through their cartography. The company’s website reads, “Our mission is for our community to be able to relive their experiences, give the gift of a memory, or just explore the world through a custom printed map!”

How Much Does Map Art Cost and Where Can I Get It?

These maps are only available on the company’s website and cost $55 per standard 18×24 inch print. For an additional $15, you can have your map made in a larger 24×36 inch size. Shipping takes just a few days, which means you can have your artwork up on the wall within a week of placing your order!

The post Put Your Love for Your Favorite City on Display with Fun Map Art first appeared on Dornob.

A colorful, kitschy poster on your wall is a pretty great addition to any room – but a colorful, kitschy poster that you can take down and fold into something functional? Even better. Austrian design collective mostlikely teamed up with artist BOICUT to make posters that are easily made into colorful lampshades.

The group set out to create complex designer objects that could be shipped anywhere in the world without exorbitant shipping costs. Indeed, the poster/shades arrive in a regular cardboard tube. After you unfurl the treasure, you can decide whether to display it on the wall or cut it up and glue it together to create a unique animal-themed lampshade.

The shades take only basic origami and gluing skills to assemble. When they are put together, you aren’t limited to using them simply for shielding your lamps. The designers suggest that you can stack several to make custom (and adorable!) totem poles, wear them as masks, or simply use them as toys or stand-alone decorations.

The post Colorful Posters Get a Second Life With a Little Origami first appeared on Dornob.

Even before Nolli Map of Rome famously rendered interior public spaces of that city as parts of the open civic landscape, basic figure-and-ground maps have told complex stories with great depth in black-and-white form on paper, canvas and papyrus.

Tidy Cities Paris

Treating solids as a kind of typography, French artist Armelle Carnon created a series of poster-style flat wall prints that seek order in the chaotic spirals, winding alleys and misshapen squares of famous cities. A strange and unique, but surprisingly alphabet-like, result emerges.

Tidy Cities Berlin

Tidy Cities Reindeer

Berlin, Istanbul, Tamarac and Paris are all recognizable to many from the composite shape of the solids and voids visible on a map, but, surprisingly, those same shapes are meaningful, comprehensible and perhaps even identifiable via the ordered parts alone.

“This work was first of all a way to understand the city of Berlin where I was in residence,” says Caron. “I redesigned it, then ordered it in another way to create a new typology. The double plan graphic game appealed to me and I started to rather compulsively organize other cities which offered different designs. The question then was: if I disturb the place, what becomes of it? If I play writing with a city image, does it become readable? Having said that, I won’t talk about fragments, I consider the drawing as a set made up of singular entities. Each city block becomes a full and autonomous graphic form. So I can manipulate them, change their orientation, move them. I seek for each shape the only obvious place in my typology.”

A similarly styled poster is available for sale on the site, “all black, it is at first reminiscent of the test and its Rorschach inkblots drawing various shapes to interpret. Then we see that the planisphere was dismantled, disassembled, as is done for a mechanical. These pieces of a complex motor, different countries and islands that constitute it are carefully aligned: Armelle Caron invites us to a flattening of our world, literally as figuratively, because dismantling graph suggests to reconsider the collective representation, particularly fixed and arbitrary we have geography. Placed next to each other, countries appear to us very differently indeed.”

Other work by Carnon likewise probe hidden depths of city streets and spaces via figure/ground variants, like cut-and-framed relief pieces which, though white on white, use shadow to contrast one type with its opposite.

The post Alphabet Cities: Maps as Typography first appeared on Dornob.
