That’s all great, but how well does this tiny portable dishwasher actually work? It’s a little too early to say, but the design is definitely promising. Measuring about 17 inches in height, length, and width, it’s easily small enough to fit on the counter of a tiny house, camper van, or RV and weighs just 25 pounds. Perhaps the Tetra’s greatest strength is the fact that it’s truly portable, requiring no plumbing at all to function. You just plug it in, fill the three-liter freshwater tank, load it up, and select a cleaning cycle. When it’s done, you dump out the gray water tank, which can be opened up for a full cleaning when needed.

The “standard” setting is for plates, bowls, glasses, and silverware, and the “eco/short” setting is for quick washes. Choose “stemware” for delicate glasses, “plastic” for items that are at risk of melting in regular dishwashers, and “fruit/vegetables” to wash produce (or whatever else you need to sanitize) without detergent. The shortest setting cleans in about 30 minutes, and the dishes will be totally dry within an hour.

The Tetra fits up to three place settings at a time, along with utensils and whatever other objects you can cram in there. Considering the small size of the load, you might wonder if this unit is actually just a waste of water and energy compared to hand washing. But according to Heatworks, using the Tetra to wash your dishes for just one meal a day can save over 15,000 liters of water in a single year. It also consumes less power than a standard dishwasher, using Ohmic Array Technology to heat water sort of like a microwave instead of traditional metal heating elements.

Another big convenience built into this little appliance is its detergent cartridge system. All the components of the detergent, including prewash, enzymes, and spot removal are kept separate within the cartridge so they can be custom-dosed according to the cleaning setting you choose. Each cartridge lasts at least 20 loads and costs $8.99, with replacements available online. If you’re the type to stay stocked up so you don’t run out, that probably works fine for you, but others might find it annoying that they can’t just pick up any old detergent at the store.

Tetra isn’t the first countertop dishwasher to hit the market, but it appears to be the most advanced thus far. Heatworks says the Tetra cleans 50 percent more dishes using 40 percent less water in 55 percent of the time of the leading countertop dishwasher, a Farberware model with a retail price of $399. First announced back in 2018, the Tetra is finally available to preorder for the same price, but it’ll cost $499 when the presale is over, so grab it now if you want one. Heatworks expects to begin shipping the Tetra by May 18th, 2022, which is apparently “No Dirty Dishes Day.”

Every apartment, condo or house needs a way to wash dishes, but without space for full-sized dishwashers, some of us have a tendency to pile tableware into sinks in an endless (non-rinse, non-dry) cycle. Dishwashers are a luxury in small kitchens, so sometimes it seems like sinks full of dirty dishes waiting for a reluctant hand-washing are just a fact of life. Thankfully, a new wave of technology from appliance manufacturers could change that sooner than you think.

Thus the FlashDry(R) from KitchenAid, since discontinued (perhaps due to its outrageous price), but a still a brilliant example of integrated design solutions for small-space living, and one that might inspire new designs to take its place. This compact dishwasher fits seamlessly in one side of a double sink, saving space under the cabinets for all-important kitchen storage.

The lid doubles as a draining board, and the unit comes with a snap-on cutting board custom-fitted to the top to further enhance the usability of this surface area. It is well-organized inside with a larger-than-average silverware basket, capacity-expanding capabilities for larger and awkwardly-shaped pots or pans.

With room enough too accommodate up to five place settings at a time, this relatively tiny device also uses 50% less water than a typical washer for similarly-sized loads, can run a full cycle in 20 to 30 minutes, and the lid pops open at the end to release internal steam and pressure.

Space-saving countertop dishwashers do exist, and are easy to find at big box stores like Home Depot, but the way they fit into the space is a little less elegant. While those of us making do with compact kitchens wait for new versions of this awesome in-sink dishwasher to make it onto the consumer market, perhaps we’ll just have to daydream about all the things we’ll do instead of (procrastinating on) hand washing the dishes.

If you live in an unusually small residence, you might laugh at the idea of somehow cramming a dishwasher and other full-sized kitchen components into your very limited kitchen (if you even have one.) But as apartments get smaller and smaller, manufacturers are going to have to think outside of the oversized suburban box in order to serve a large number of potential customers. Here’s one design that does just that.

Unsurprisingly a Red Dot award winner, the K5 by Kitchoo is a compact kitchenette design that’s practically the definition of compact, efficient and space-saving – a tiny all-in-one, side-island unit that serves functions normally occupying half of a standard-sized kitchen.

Two induction burners for cooking, a fridge (with freezer) for cooling, a telescopic tap, petite dishwasher and more … and all of it folds into an inconspicuous, table-topped side cupboard just 1300 mm x 1000 mm x 650mm. Designed for tiny spaces, this smart kitchen concept packs everything you need into a unit that’s small enough to fit in a tiny house or micro apartment.

Flush doors without handles and flat integrated appliances disappear into the seams when the unit is shut, but are available at the touch of a button, flip of a lid or pull of a handle as needed – handy yet minimalist through and through.

Wash, rinse and spin are all separate cycles in an ordinary, full-sized, dish-washing device for a house or home. This conceptual electricity-free, eco-washer-to-go builds them into one compact portable unit requiring no external plumbing or power to plug into.

Perfect for picnics or camping trips, but also great for any abode without room in the plan for a few-square-foot appliance. Click shut the top to the front, grab the rubberized handle, and then activate the all-in-one system is activated by hand-cranking a circular disc along one side.

The interior dish rack uses (a bucket or reservoir of) water poured in from above, combined with a cleaning brush and biodegradable soap, to re-cycle your dirty dishes. An optional post-rinse, dish-drying cycle operates with centrifugal force, much like a vegetable dryer.

Interior spaces, slots and clips are optimized to accommodate a basic dinner-for-four set of tableware with dishes, forks, knives and spoons. EcoWash was designed by David Stockton, but is not yet in production nor for sale.

How often do you really need to do a whole load of dish – or better yet: why would you? If you eat alone or with another person, maybe a few plates, glasses and pieces of silverware are all that is required for a single between-meal cycle.

That is the idea behind this tiny dish-washing device (by Robert Lange) slotted right down into the top of your kitchen island. It is sized and shaped to fit various combinations – hopefully enough for most day-to-day uses.

Set next to the sink, you simply rinse after you eat and (instead of leaving it linger in the basin or partially filling a full-sized washer) drop it down into the convenient space next to it. Maybe not great for guests, but most of the time a stellar and simple little alternative.

There is a key question of efficiency with any design of this kind – can the pump, turbine, heater and water tank truly be used in an energy-saving manner when the loads are so small and runs so frequent? Hard to say, but as a concept it seems like a great middle-of-the-road solution for people who want some option between a large-scale dishwasher and hand washing everything in sinks.

It is one of those great appliance mysteries: you shut the door, turn a knob or press a button, sounds start up and an hour later the dishes are done. But have you ever wanted to see what happens in between?

More than just adding a transparent front to the process, this see-through dishwasher design augments the viewing experience by elongating the interior of the washer area. Also, a moving washing unit allows you to dynamically view the process of dishes being cleaned.

Perhaps best of all, this is ultimately a multi-functional futuristic dishwasher design – the rack serves as full-time storage for the dishes and eliminates the steps of taking them out and putting them away once they are finished being washed.

It’s an elegant solution to a perpetual problem, particularly for those of us who live in smaller spaces. Conventional dishwasher designs simply take up a lot of real estate in a compact kitchen, making this appliance one of the first to be nixed when designers and builders are trying to save space. But who wants to hand wash all of their dishes, all the time?

Making its debut at the University of Quebec in Montreal Design Grad Show, this transparent horizontal dishwasher concept feels like it traveled through time from the future to show us what’s possible. We can only hope manufacturers are paying attention, and will respond with similar designs available on a wide scale.
