The team then cleaned up the data by deleting outliers and organizing it all by state, ultimately creating two maps: one that shows the most popular design style tag in each state, and one that shows which states share their #instahomes the most.

They discovered the state of California is particularly proud of their interior design efforts, publishing over 10,000 design-related posts to date. Florida was barely a close second with a still notable 4,600+ posts, and Texas measured fairly high, too. The more remote states of North and South Dakota, on the other hand, either don’t focus on interior design styles at all or just aren’t frequent Instagram users, considering they only showed 38 and 42 hashtags, respectively.

When it comes to style, the easternmost and Southeast regions of the country are dominated by #coastalliving, the most popular indoor decor style of all the options listed, with 18 total states boasting the hashtag.

#MidcenturyModern came in a close second, dominating 16 states across the midwest plus California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington. Eight other states felt #rusticdecor better defined their tastes, while Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee instead favored #traditionalhome. Border-sharing Utah and Nevada felt the #modernhome vibe, and verdant Vermont was the sole state to come in under the #cottagestyle heading.

Of course, there’s a bit of subjectivity to consider when it comes to describing design elements. For example, one person’s definition of boho might be another person’s version of traditional. So the Angie’s List researchers went a bit further, identifying elements and images that best represented each category of decor.

#coastalliving incorporates a soft palette of blues and white, along with nautical elements and natural materials such as wood and rope.

#boholiving wasn’t well represented, though it’s likely something along the lines of plush velvets, coarse tweeds, and the soft cottons of pillows and cushions counterbalanced with copious throw rugs.

#midcenturymodern is a classic design mostly focused on sleek, minimalist furniture accented with unexpected colors from textiles and art.

#rusticdecor is more of a farmhouse look with chalkboards, wire baskets, open shelving, and metal accents.

If you think #traditionalhome is more your style, think blank canvas with neutral-colored walls, balanced out with hearty floral or damask upholstery and striking artwork. Of course, traditional style can also overlap with #cottagestyle, which itself features bright and airy spaces identified by antiques and cozy textiles.

The best thing about the Angie’s List findings is that they prove it’s almost impossible for a home to perfectly fall into any one of these categories. Back in 2002, Clarkson took the world by storm as the first-ever winner of American Idol. Since then, she’s sold over 35 million albums and 55 million singles worldwide, repeatedly racking up awards for her music across a wide range of categories. In addition to building her repertoire across almost every genre, she hosts a talk show, raises four kids with her husband, and has even returned to American Idol as a successful coach.

Now, Kelly has broken new ground as the first brand ambassador for the popular furniture retailer Wayfair, who officially announced the collaboration back in February. Her Kelly Clarkson Home collection, which debuted in April 2020, is described as “French Country” and fuses the two unexpected yet complementary styles of bohemian and farmhouse.

The collection is light and playful, a potpourri of styles from assorted decades that just “go together.” Rusting dining sets nestle next to tasseled bedding, and beaded chandeliers hang above metal bar carts. Every piece is mixable and matchable with just a whim of creativity. Best of all, Wayfair pledged a portion of the first week’s sales of the Kelly Clarkson Home collection to COVID-19 relief efforts.

To promote the assortment, Kelly sat down for a special Q&A with House Beautiful magazine. She confessed that the appeal of Wayfair was their versatility, adding that she appreciated “the fact that Wayfair can help anyone — regardless of budget, style, or taste — create a living space that their entire family can enjoy…they really make a house into a home. Decorating can be daunting, but Wayfair makes the process fun.”

Kelly also found the freeform style of decorating liberating, telling the interviewer that she took “great pride in the fact that we have created a home that is filled with love and warmth and that is very much represented in the decor throughout the house. I like the fact that my decor can’t really be defined as one thing or put into one category… It’s very airy and feminine, with charming accents and vintage-inspired finds. KC Home is proof that style doesn’t have to fit a mold. Everyone should have the confidence to create a home that reflects their personal taste and style.”

When asked about how she would portray the collection in three words, Kelly was careful to include what effect her artistic side played in developing each piece. She finally replied, “Calming, fresh, inspiring. (But) as an artist, I love to create and be bold. The same can be seen in my home collection…I’m not afraid to mix colors, styles, textures…when you put the right things together, it just works.”

There is no escaping those innate and early-learned associations – for some, it means sleeping to gentle noises on planes, and for others, the act of rocking tilts us softly into a deep slumber.

Richard Clarkson and company wanted to create a kind of low-tech, sensory-deprivation, sofa-style seat where one can curl up and forget the workaday worries of ordinary life … and perhaps even doze over before you notice you are slowly falling asleep.

While there is art and craft in this object, there is science that went into its design as well. Specifically, research into autistic children and those who suffer from RMD (rhythmic moving disorder) played a crucial role in the shape and structure of the result.

For all its theoretical complexity, the final form this papasan-style basket chair looks quite simple (and extremely comfortable). A bleached-and-bent-wood framework with unfinished wooden-slat infill is cushioned by a series of coverless pillow strips, making the assembly legible but not overpowering as part of the appearance. The entire piece rocks forward due to wood weight when unoccupied, then lounges back naturally when someone sits in it.

“Cradle Chair is about creating a safe, comfortable and relaxing enviroment in which the user can dissipate the overstimulation of their senses. The design was heavily directed by a synthesis of research into Autism and children with Rhythmic Movement Disorder (RMD) as well as safety, sustainability, function and aesthetics.”

The Cradle Chair was briefly available for sale with a retail price of $8,400, but it looks like it’s all sold out. The designer says it’s made of non-toxic materials, including natural canvas, organic wax, natural glues and authentic New Zealand wool.

Designer Richard Clarkson is also responsible for the beautiful Rain Lamp, which magnifies the movement of water droplets and uses light to project them onto nearby surfaces for a soothing experience.
