When space is tight but you don’t want to move, how can your home adapt to your changing needs? Maybe you’ve got a baby on the way, a new home-based business or a sudden need for a craft room, but these unexpected space challenges happen to just about everyone at some point or another. Sometimes, all you have to do is look up to find the answers.
When a couple living in a cramped two-bedroom town home realized they needed a dedicated workspace and play area, they weren’t sure how to make it happen. But their home just happened to have a very common feature in contemporary residential architecture: a double-height foyer. What came next was a stroke of absolute genius as the homeowners realized this space was destined for bigger and better things.

All of that blank empty space (which, incidentally, tends to waste energy heating and cooling the house) could easily be turned into a brand new loft. The fact that it already had two windows didn’t hurt!
This DIY loft transformation was all done by the homeowners and their family. A wooden frame affixed to the tall foyer walls was the foundation for the new room. Pale wood flooring, white walls, and all that natural light make the small loft look larger than it is.

This DIY home renovation is nothing short of stunning, and the before and after pictures are proof. The addition of safety rails, a play area and a desk have made the brand new loft into the perfect flexible family area. The DIY nature of the project makes it even more appealing since so many homes feature spaces like this that are just going to waste. With a little creativity, those wasted spaces can become truly exceptional parts of the home. Isn’t this a cool example of clever small space design?
