<p>Steep enough to fit into small spaces, this unusual <a href="https://dornob.com/swiss-cheesed-playfully-suspended-perforated-staircase/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suspended staircase</a> design features a system of open-frame stairs that hover above built-in storage and a workspace. The <a href="https://dornob.com/multifunctional-furniture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multifunctional</a> piece uses the samba stairs principle of alternating steps to make the ascension from one level to the next easy and comfortable despite the steep angle.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="657" height="1024" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer-657x1024.jpeg" alt="Stair Desk combo by Mieke Meijer" class="wp-image-87267" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer-657x1024.jpeg 657w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer-468x729.jpeg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer-768x1197.jpeg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer-986x1536.jpeg 986w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stair-Desk-combo-by-Mieke-Meijer.jpeg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="749" height="1024" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Combo-Mieke-Meijer-749x1024.jpeg" alt="Stairs Desk Combo Mieke Meijer" class="wp-image-87268" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Combo-Mieke-Meijer-749x1024.jpeg 749w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Combo-Mieke-Meijer-468x640.jpeg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Combo-Mieke-Meijer-768x1051.jpeg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Combo-Mieke-Meijer.jpeg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px" /></figure>

<p>No under-the-stairs space is wasted, with virtually every element of the stairs serving more than one practical purpose, yet the design still feels light and sculptural. The spaces within the open steps in the floating portion of the staircase can hold books and decorative objects.</p>

<p>Object élevé by Dutch design studio <a href="http://miekemeijer.nl/">Mieke Meijer</a> is inspired by the stark industrial architectural design featured in the black and white photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher. The designers translated those buildings into handmade furniture in black steel and oak for a designer&#8217;s 1930s residence in a suburb of The Hague.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="665" height="1024" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve-665x1024.jpeg" alt="Stairs Desk Object Eleve" class="wp-image-87269" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve-665x1024.jpeg 665w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve-468x720.jpeg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve-768x1182.jpeg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve-998x1536.jpeg 998w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Stairs-Desk-Object-Eleve.jpeg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 665px) 100vw, 665px" /></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">More from the designers</h4>

<p>&#8220;<em>Objet élevé</em> is an installation in three parts that functions as a connection between two floors while also offering space to work, collect and store. The project has been designed by Studio Mieke Meijer for the residence of Just Haasnoot in Wassenaar.&#8221;<br><br>&#8220;The industrial character of <em>Objet élevé</em> stands in strong contrast to the elegant 1930’s residence and transforms a high-traffic area into a memorable residential room. The construction, built from both standing and suspended parts, largely consists of open frames allowing the design’s transparent character to be maintained. Using the samba stairs principle made it possible to realize a steep staircase that is still comfortable to walk. &#8220;</p><div class="newsletter-inline-wrapper-article">
