Before Hogarth Architects could renovate and transform this stunning South Kensington, London flat, they had to rewind the space back to an earlier version. A false ceiling and add-on room partition had to be removed to open up the living area and reveal its original grand scale. Due to the building being listed as historical, the cornices and fireplace surrounds could not be altered. But that small restriction would not stop an incredible transformation from taking place.

After the flat was restored to one large room, the architects added a massive two-level timber structure. The new piece contains the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and a small mezzanine overlooking the main living space.

This huge piece of furniture, according to the architects, contains all of the functions that a “man about town” might need. It also just happens to be incredibly stylish and surprisingly modern. The combination of rustic wood with modern frosted glass makes for a very metropolitan look.

Whether for a single person or a family, adding a large, bold object like this in the middle of a living space is a creative way to effectively double the floorspace of a living area…provided that you have sufficiently high ceilings, of course.

“The space is located on the first floor of a listed building,” says project architect Hamish Herford. “The fire surround and cornice, by law, had to remain. The existing space was divided into three rooms with a false ceiling while the new design aims to restore the space back to its original proportions, which would have been as one room.”

“The use of traditional materials such as the oak mezzanine and kitchen and the beautifully detailed cornicing combine superbly and counter balance more modern features such as glass walls, stark white colors and poured rubber floors, to produce a luxurious yet practical living space. The decked roof garden – designed and carefully lit to compliment the interior space – provides a glorious refuge from London’s hectic pace as well as an excellent entertainment area secluded by mature plants and bamboo.”

The post Tiny London Flat Dramatically Transformed by a New Wooden Loft first appeared on Dornob.
