Modular Desert Home Design for Modern Nomadic Living
Mongolians have been nomadic for centuries, a tradition that has continued through modern times – but contemporary nomads have new needs that their ancestors did not face, hence this creative design idea by Ordos for nomadic desert housing.
Historically, Mongolians holed up in, well, holes to avoid harsh winters as well as hot summers. This concept is extended here with thick-walled semi-submerged structures that anticipate temperature extremes, buried and blended with the landscape.
If the exterior is the organic-seeming structural core of this building, the interior is a modular free-form plug-and-play wonderland that can be adapted and changed over time from season to season and resident to resident with modern and comfortable underground living spaces within a monumental organic form.
