Accordion Shelves Go From Folded to Full-Size in No Time
The only part of moving that approaches the difficulty of moving a book collection is moving the shelves that the books sit on. German designer Meike Harde has invented bookshelves called Stockwerk that fold and unfold like an accordion.
The main pieces of the shelves are solid wood connected via piano hinges. The hinges allow the shelves to compress into a compact piece that looks a bit like a stool. Lifting up on each side section and locking the hinges creates a beautiful bookshelf with an almost honeycomb-like shape.
Some of the shelves can remain folded thanks to the shelves’ folding design. This creates a variable height shelf that can be customized to any household. Stockwerk arrives in a compact little container that is unfolded and assembled with no tools at all.
