Step into the shower after a tough session at the gym, place your clothes in a special compartment, and when you’re done, your clothes will be clean and dry. That’s the basic idea behind the Washit, a water-saving appliance that filters used shower water and routes it to a washing machine. This all-in-one unit cuts water waste without asking users to sacrifice time in the shower.

Designed by four Turkish university students, the Washit eliminates huge piles of laundry by encouraging users to wash a few items of clothing at a time as they shower, without using any extra water.

It’s envisioned for both private use in the home, and public use in places like airports, fitness centers and festivals. The user can remove their clothing inside the privacy of the shower unit, place them in the washer and retrieve them when they’re done. It just takes a little bit of extra time to dry them.

It works by passing the greywater from the shower drain into a series of three carbon, organic and chemical filters, sending it to a storage tank. When the next person steps in, the water is ready to complete the cycle again. The unit automatically refills itself from the water main when more water is needed.

The Washit concept won the IF Concept Design Award 2012: Hansgrohe Special Award for this innovative approach to responsible water usage.
