There are a lot of reduce, reuse and recycle design projects that we look at and think: sure, I could do that. In reality, however, it takes some vision to see something lying alongside the road and envision a creative way to upcycle it into something else that is new and better.

Most people would pass by three dusty and torn old black metal-and-leather chairs without a second glance, but Maria Ahlbrandt saw a way to turn the odd old furniture set into a single new furniture object.

With simple wooden slats for the seat and back and a healthy dose of silver spray paint, upcycling these word-out chairs into a fresh-looking wood bench was a relatively easy process requiring little in terms of metal-or-wood-working expertise. Inspired? Good, keep it in mind the next time you pass free furniture scraps on the side of the street.
