This design is definitely still in the prototype phase, but the manner in which it opens is one well worth following up on – in a single motion, twice the square footage becomes available (as well as additional fenestration).

The rotating portion is made to wrap over interior fixtures and furnishings, and contains a built-in bed for rapid deployment and use.

And while the rigid-frame connections look sturdy, some questions still come to mind about the robustness of the glazing (presumably some form of Plexiglass-like shatter-proof material) as well as the need for windows elsewhere on the box (eliminating those would provide a more transportable shell).

Still, the basic idea is quite compelling – something of simple shape, cheap materials and conventional dimensions that could easily be packed in groups, but then deploys into a bigger, more useful and distinctive form. Design by Michel Antoun Zateef.
