The German design company Stilform takes classic themes and updates them for the modern world, with a few clever twists to enhance the final product.
“We are a team full of contrasts, energy and curiosity,” say the designers, and that neatly sums up the work they do.
Take their latest product, the Kosmos pen. It’s clearly a minimalist design, and won the coveted Red Dot Design Award for 2016. And in these times when bells and whistles are expected and often rewarded, it’s refreshing to see an item that is stylishly simple yet uses new technological options to make it an intricate instrument. It’s as if you instinctively intuit the pen’s inner workings while appreciating its sleek shape and fine writing ability.
The Stilform team used the age-old Golden Ratio for the pen’s design. “We have put a lot of effort into applying the Golden Ratio to every component of the pen,” they explain. “The result looks very clean, minimalistic and beautiful.”
Speaking of clean, the Kosmos pen doesn’t need a clicker to open — of course that would disrupt the smooth design. Instead, it features a clever new mechanism that lets you unlocks the pen by simply shifting the cap. The cap doesn’t slide around when you’re writing because a strong magnet inside the pen holds it securely in place.
As you see from the demonstration above, you can get really fancy and show off with a one-handed deployment of the Kosmos.
The pen is made from a solid block of aluminum alloy, which is strong enough to be a favorite material for the aerospace industry, so we doubt you’ll be denting it anytime soon.
If you’re in the market for a stylish pen, we expect you’re looking for one that matches everything else arranged on your desk. Why not, right? Well, you’ll be delighted to hear that Stilform has you covered. The team has come up with a variety of finishes for the Kosmos, including comet grey, star silver, galaxy gold and rose moon. They say these match up with Apple device colors. Now you’ll just have to make sure you wear coordinating clothes.
As for the ink, the designers have done the legwork for you. They report that they did extensive trials and decided on German ink and a Swiss tungsten tip for the Kosmos. You get a free refill when you buy the pen, and then you can order them from Stilform or use a compatible Parker-style G2 refill.
The company is currently designing a ring clip so that you can secure your Kosmos pen in a jacket pocket or on a notebook — a good idea, we say, as chronic pen-losers… (Another reason why we like the sliding cap design — one less thing to drop or lose.)
So, whether you’re a graphic designer, artist, writer, top-notch doodler or pen collector, it’s worth checking out the Kosmos. It’s currently being crowdfunded and passed its funding goal in a matter of days. Stilform’s timeline shows production starting in December and on-demand sales opening up in February 2017.
