Though industry greats like Sony and Xbox chose not to attend, this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) still yielded plenty of intriguing previews of upcoming games. Held from June 11th to 13th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the event allowed fans, press, and industry analysts to test out unfinished games, often offering live gameplay for a great taste of what might be the next big phenomenon.

Nintendo, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Bethesda and other gaming companies debuted dozens of new games at the event, from new and fresh titles to continuations of popular series and old-school revivals. Indeed, there was a little something for everyone at this year’s event. Here are some of our personal favorites from the bunch, but you can always check out the rest at E3Expo.com.

Cyberpunk 2077

With an appearance from Keanu Reeves, Cyberpunk 2077 was always bound to get a lot of attention — but celebrity cameos are far from the only thing this game has to offer. Delivering on all the hype it’s built since its concept art was first released, the futuristic role-playing game from CD Projekt Red features Reeves in the role of Johnny Silverhand, who appears to the player as a sort of digital ghost. It will be available on Windows, Xbox One, and PS4 on April 16th, 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamor, and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset, and play style, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.”

DOOM Eternal

The direct sequel to DOOM, winner of The Game Awards’ Best Action Game of 2016, DOOM Eternal carries on the classic series with more urgency —and better graphics — than ever before. This newest iteration of the first-person shooter ups the stakes with a play style that grants you health or ammunition based on how you maneuver on your quest to kill a host of demons. E3 attendees especially loved the new “flame belch” companion attack that sets the demons on fire. DOOM Eternal will be released on November 22nd, 2019 for Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

DOOM Eternal puts you in control of the unstoppable DOOM Slayer as you blow apart new and classic demons with powerful weapons in unbelievable and never-before-seen worlds. As the DOOM Slayer, you return to find Earth has suffered a demonic invasion. Raze Hell and discover the Slayer’s origins and his enduring mission to rip and tear…until it is done.”

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Currently being developed by Respawn Entertainment, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gives you the chance to wield your own lightsaber in a single-player experience set in the period following Star Wars Episode III: Revenge fo the Sith. Players take the role of Cal Kestis, a former Jedi padawan, who must defend himself against rogue troopers to save a friend. The E3 preview showed us 15 minutes of story-driven gameplay that’s sure to satisfy fans of the original trilogy. With any luck, it’ll also be a big improvement on 2017’s error-prone Star Wars Battlefront 2. Its initial release date is set for November 15th, 2019.

“Hone lightsaber combat forms to refine striking, blocking, and dodging your enemies. Use your Jedi weapon and the Force to take on any challenge. As one of the last Jedi, you must do whatever it takes to survive. Complete your training before the Inquisitors discover your plan to rebuild the Jedi Order. Explore ancient forests, windswept cliffs, and haunted jungles as you decide when and where you want to go next.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Just because guns and gore aren’t your style doesn’t mean you have to be left out of the E3 fun. Nintendo proved that to us with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latest in a beloved franchise that’s been running for nearly two decades, which allows you to create your own little island utopia. This release for the Switch expands multiplayer capabilities, allowing up to eight people to play simultaneously on the same island either online or in the same room. You can also enjoy activities and host events together in the game, many of which fall on real-life holidays. It’s cute, wholesome, and a great way to bond with surly relatives at Thanksgiving. Expect it to drop on March 20th, 2020.
