It’s a favorite exercise of designers to pair two materials that seem to be completely unrelated and to explore the way they interact with one another.
Belgian designer Robin Berrewaerts has carried out this exercise using yellow pine wood and concrete. The two are not often seen together, as yellow pine is most often used to make plywood and dimensional lumber.
The Concrete Pine series consists of three handcrafted pieces: a bench, a low stool, and a rather remarkable floor lamp. As advertised, each is made of yellow pine wood and concrete.
Berrewaerts wanted to find an authentic, intuitive way to process the materials and join them together. The designer learned and adapted the processes as the project went on, resulting in a set of furniture that looks both homespun and compellingly modern.
