As a theoretical movement, Postmodernism in architecture (and in other arts) involved appropriating ancient or otherwise antiquated symbols to serve new purposes and convey complex meanings – it was short-lived. Still, there are some who seek to use symbolism in domestic architecture to create unique interpretations of the past, thinking both within and outside of the modernist box.

While one might be tempted to say this is a “decorated shed” not a “duck (long story: see, Robert Venturi) – the effect of this permeable decorative layer is more than skin deep. The faux frameworks it creates are legible within the building as well as without, providing shade and visual interest to those inside.

While it can hardly be called truly contextual at the very least this structure goes further than a simple steel-and-glass modernist box might, attempting to find some middle ground between modern materials and classic forms and structural methods.
