It just goes to show you that there is delicate artistic potential in the most mundane of waste materials. What could be more boring and ordinary than those cardboard tubes the clutter every garbage can in America?

Their creator, Yuken Teruya, currently lives and works in New York City but “was Born in Okinawa, Japan in 1973. Yuken received his BFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1996, MFA from the school of Visual Arts, New York in 2001.” This work arises out of the fine crafts of Japanese paper art and fascination with the details of nature.

This project plays with light, shadow, decor and intimate settings. “Toilet rolls sprouting and spreading branches are installed to a wall to create a forest. There is a moment when the cut-out branches and leaves start holding themselves up with their own strength. It is as if I am helping the paper awakens its ability to come to life.”
