Plastic clothes hangers seem like the last place you would find design innovation – or perhaps second-to-last after the closets we put them in. With a twist (and curve) or two, however, these otherwise ordinary and hidden accessories manage to add an animated element to what may be the most boring interior space in a typical home.

Named “Dino Wavy” by their designer Lincoln Kayiwa for obvious reasons, this series of hangers works precisely with the natural repetition of simple hangers. A simple adjustment in height with each consecutive hanger works to create the overall effect of a subtle spine-like curvature when the set is viewed as a whole.

Of course, there are endless effects that could be achieved with this system – there is no rule that indicates they have to go in a particular order. Flexible, functional and fun – not bad at all for what individually would be mistaken for another set of cheap white plastic coat hangers.

Designs like this are often just concept illustrations and not products you can actually buy, but Kayiwa’s website indicates that you can place a special order directly through them if you’re dying to have it. Sure, there are other space-saving hanger designs out there, but none quite as stylish as this one.

About the designer: “KAYIWA’s portfolio is diverse – ranging from furniture to housewares. With a witty yet elegant disregard for convention, the studio’s collectibles are exquisite sculptures in their own right. At the same time, KAYIWA is passionate about fusing art with design to create functional solutions for everyday needs. The resulting limited edition objets d’art are genuine collectors’ items, which continue to appreciate in value over time.”

“KAYIWA’s Finnish-Ugandan designer/artist borrows principles and aesthetic elements from the rich cultures and traditions of African and Nordic art, craft and design. His creations acquire a story and become a heritage to pass down to the next generation.”
