Looks can be deceiving. When you see it leaning against the wall, “CANVAS” by YOY looks like any ordinary painting, albeit one of a crisply rendered antique chair.

The image looks so realistic you could almost sit in it … and, it turns out, you can. But the trick is no mere optical illusion created by clever photography angles – the painting really does sit flat until activated by interaction.

Studio YOY (images by Yasuko Furukawa) created this Canvas series using a combination of wood, aluminum and flexible fabric, screen-printing the surface with drawings reflecting underlying functionality.

As someone sits down, trusting it to work, the “canvas” stretches, deforming under their weight, while a hidden surface supports them.

In addition to the chair, a lounger and love seat variant add some comfortable and multi-person playfulness to the mix. Can’t you imagine having the whole series hung up on the walls of your home, only to shock and delight your guests when you take them down and offer them as real seats?

“A canvas shaped chair with a drawing of a chair. It can be used by leaning against a wall. A frame made of wood and aluminum is covered by an elastic fabric printed with texture of a canvas and a drawing of chair. There are 3 types of size, a stool, an armchair and a sofa. Produced by Innermost. Sofa and armchair types are available.
