<p>Looks can be deceiving. When you see it leaning against the wall, &#8220;CANVAS&#8221; by YOY looks like any ordinary <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="painting (opens in a new tab)" href="https://dornob.com/tag/painting/" target="_blank">painting</a>, albeit one of a crisply rendered <a href="https://dornob.com/hybrid-heirloom-wood-plastic-fused-to-fix-a-family-chair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="antique chair. (opens in a new tab)">antique chair.</a></p>

<p>The image looks so realistic you could almost sit in it &#8230; and, it turns out, you can. But the trick is no mere optical illusion created by clever photography angles &#8211; the painting really does sit flat until activated by interaction.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-on-wall-1024x683.jpg" alt="YOY canvas chair on wall" class="wp-image-74910" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-on-wall-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-on-wall-468x312.jpg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-on-wall-768x512.jpg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-on-wall.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-sitting-on-canvas-chair-1024x683.jpg" alt="YOY sitting on canvas chair" class="wp-image-74909" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-sitting-on-canvas-chair-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-sitting-on-canvas-chair-468x312.jpg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-sitting-on-canvas-chair-768x512.jpg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-sitting-on-canvas-chair.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><a href="http://yoy-idea.jp/">Studio YOY</a> (images by Yasuko Furukawa) created this Canvas series using a combination of wood, aluminum and flexible fabric, screen-printing the surface with drawings reflecting underlying functionality.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-collection-1024x683.jpg" alt="YOY canvas chair collection" class="wp-image-74908" srcset="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-collection-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-collection-468x312.jpg 468w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-collection-768x512.jpg 768w, https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/YOY-canvas-chair-collection.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>As someone sits down, trusting it to work, the &#8220;canvas&#8221; stretches, deforming under their weight, while a hidden surface supports them.</p><div class="newsletter-inline-wrapper-article">

<p>In addition to the chair, a lounger and love seat variant add some comfortable and multi-person playfulness to the mix. Can&#8217;t you imagine having the whole series hung up on the walls of your home, only to shock and delight your guests when you take them down and offer them as real seats? </p>
