Everyone loves the idea of curling up with a book – but how about within a bookcase? The Cave is a combination bookcase and lounge chair design that provides a comfortable, cozy and visually secluded place to wrap yourself in your favorite volume and read for a while with a soft overhead light.

“In urban life, there seems to be a common understanding that people tend to consciously or subconsciously become wary of strangers surrounding them. They are always balancing a certain level of privacy with others. A bookcase CAVE provides a certain private reading space within its form. As a seat height is just above the floor, CAVE gives a feeling of hiding from others standing around it. Books can be stored on both sides. Therefore, CAVE can also function as a partition of the room.”

A similar design from Adachi is the PET CAVE. “Animals’ territorial behavior is innate and essential among them. They always look for a comfortable place to be. A bookcase PET CAVE provides your pet (dog or cat) with such space. The pet house, which is surrounded by shelves, comes with a little cushion for them to rest in comfortably. The shelves can be used to store books as well as display your favorite objects. Therefore, PET CAVE creates a little space to encourage the relationship between you as owner and your pet.”

For children, the bookcase chair provides a nifty crawl space and it can even be a pet retreat. Placed against the wall it becomes a cozy nook and put in the center of a room it becomes a spatial divider with accessibility through its center. While the Cave is a nifty design it is not the only conceptual furniture for combining lounging and book storage:
