Musical Stairs: Playable Harp Strings in Place of Bannisters

Playful takes on a new meaning in this project that ties taunt threads between supporting elements to turn a vintage Victorian staircase into a functional musical instrument.

Leander Angerer and David Ross (images by Colin Ross via Inhabitat) composed the piece from tennis racket strings that still provide a strong measure of safety from falling while adding some interactivity to the mix.

The resulting work encourages people can strum as they walk between floors, and is of course set low and thus particularly inviting for small children who would also fortuitously find it the most fun.

In addition to the initial creative leap, the construction process was anything but trivial: 1000 holes had to be drilled and hundreds of meters worth of string had to be strung to complete it.
