Finish eating your soup and save the best bite for last: the one where you chomp right into the utensil you are using to scoop it up.

We have silverware for eating at home (though even that requires washing) and plastic tableware for events and travel, but this solution is environmentally friendly in either context. TriangleTree proposes three flavors of this edible design – plain, spicy or sweet – to match various meals as needed.

“The Eco-spoon removes the need for non-biodegradable disposable plastic spoons.It is 100% natural, made entirely of corn. It is 100% biodegradable. And 100% edible. And 100% good for you and the environment …. It’s tasty, it’s healthy, it’s convenient, and it promotes a cleaner tomorrow. The spoons could be purchased in supermarkets for home use. They could also be served alongside appetizers and meals at restaurants.”

The only real question (aside from the taste itself) is one of consistency and absorbency – strike the right balance and your soup would hopefully not soften the spoon too soon, but would soak in the flavors for that final bite.

Plywood, long considered a material best hidden in any finished space, has been slowly making its way into the mainstream material handbooks of architects and interior designs – and for good reason.

Aside from being inexpensive, it is rich in texture and can be purchased in higher grades than what people typically think of (though, for some, knots are part of the fun, too).

With fewer knots and potential splinters, quality plywood provides a particularly potent way to juxtapose more variegated patterns with flat white walls, monotone floors and solid expanses of glazing.

This particular design by Paul de Ruiter with i29 interior architects shows its versatility – it can serve to create accent walls, doors, beds shelves and more, and serves as a great backdrop for more colorful belongings.

Freeing your feet from the worry of bumping into sub-surface supports, these clever round and rectangular tables look dizzyingly legless at first glance.

Of course, close inspection quickly reveals the mechanism behind the initial mystery – the loads are translated down through single-side arms attached to the chairs around each table.

Designed by Ingo Maurer (in production from Established & Sons), the components of these pieces look intentionally normal, making it all the more surprising when you notice there are no normal legs as such.

Live and work spaces have a tricky set of tasks to manage – beyond the layout itself, there is the look. In this case, the architects managed to tap into the traditional style of a regional townhome while also creating enough visual interest to suggest a retail purpose.

Designed by ISSHO Architects (images by Koichi Torimuraark), dark wood louvers tap into a long-standing approach of using latticework to suggest the nature or type of shop, but in this case, the forms are modulated and distinctively modern – they still say ‘noodles’, perhaps, but in a very new and different way.

This curvilinear is carried into the ceiling of the restaurant space, flipping from black to a series of white slats that interact with the lighting above. Narrow and functional, the first floor is given over toe the noodle shop, while the above levels are saved for the residential parts of the program.

Who has more experience living in cramped spaces than prisoners? Modeled after a jail cell, the ironically named Freedom Room is a 96-square-foot micro apartment offering “a different idea” for temporary and social housing, hotels and hostels. Inmates at Italy’s high-security prison in Spoleto served as consultants, using their intimate knowledge of tiny living spaces to create a living unit that is flexible and adaptable.

In working with the prisoners, the Freedom Room project leaders discovered that by necessity, most prison furniture is used for purposes other than those intended. Objects have to be multi-functional in order for such a small space to serve as the one room they have available for functions ranging from studying to working out.

The designers explain that many prison cells are lined with shelving made of cigarette cartons, and storage can be hard to come by even for the few personal possessions the prisoners own. As a result, the prisoners packed the Freedom Room with as much storage as possible, with a doorway dividing the living area from the sleeping area doubling as a shelf.

In less than 100 square feet, the inmates have managed to fit a work/dining area, two beds, drawers, overhead storage, a kitchen with a slide-out cutting board serving as a counter, and a bathroom. Additional seating hangs from the wall. Even with all of this function, the apartment feels surprisingly spacious and uncluttered – a far cry from real jail cells, and a option for meeting the growing needs for increasingly compact living spaces.
