Ingenious Lighting Solutions by Graypants – From Seattle to Amsterdam

Original Recycled CardboardScrap Lights

Scraplights are made from scraps. Scraps of cardboard, in fact. Recycled cardboard is pulped together – then something ingenious happens:

“Handcrafted from recycled cardboard, Graypants’ flagship Scraplight series provides warm, intimate, and functional lighting for any occasion or type of space.”

Based in Seattle and Amsterdam, Graypants Studios describes themselves as ‘a team of problem solvers.’ As a team of architects, product designers and craftsmen, just one of their design solutions is impressive, beautiful lighting.

From the Graypants’ website: “Tough and elegant, each shade is precision cut with a laser and assembled by hand using a nontoxic adhesive. All Scraplights are treated with an environmentally friendly fire retardant.”

Original White Moon Scraplights

‘White Moon’ Scraplights

Introduced in 2016 – “The Scraplight white series pushed the collaboration between the Graypants Seattle and Amsterdam studios to new levels. Through intensive research, development and dedication, the team was able to build upon the solid foundation of their original Scraplight series.”

In partnership with a social works program, the Scraplight ‘White Moon’ lights are carefully handmade in Holland, creating craft-based careers in the local community. Custom FSC-certified paper is produced from forests that replant more trees than they harvest.

Mirroring the original Scraplights design, a variety of shapes and sizes is readily available and the white Scraplights can also be custom-made to order.

”Scraplight white series is a fresh take on an original idea. This was worth the wait.” – Graypants.

For the creation of White Moon Scraplights, pure white corrugated cardboard is custom-made then precision cut into the  ”bright, modern glow always imagined. The crisp translucency perfectly contrasts the rustic warmth of the natural cardboard Scraplights, making them a chic alternative for a variety of spaces.”

Murmuratin Lighting Graypants

Graypants’ ‘Murmuration’ lights are designed to be hung together in billowing installations, though they can also be simply suspended in clusters. The collection was inspired by the rise and fall of murmurations of massed birds in flight.

Strewn together like slightly wonky, misshapen lanterns, the Murmuration lights look organic, wild and wonderful:

“The Murmuration collection will be compromised of several different pendants available in multiple materials. The collection will be available in two very unique ways: as standardized arrangements or as custom installations by the Graypants team.”

Just perfect for a white wedding – a resplendent Loci chandelier.

Graypants’  Loci series “harnesses the efficient technology of fiber optics, allowing for expansive custom installations that glow like a galaxy of stars.”

Loci is the Latin word for ‘centralized sources of power’.  The name Loci was chosen by Graypants to reference the series’ innovative method of achieving hundreds, or thousands of singular points of light in an installation.

“Rather than using many individual bulbs, which would gobble energy and require frequent maintenance, Loci installations are powered by only a small handful of ultra-bright, energy-efficient LEDs.”
